Heavy selling in blue-chip stocks drags benchmark lower despite healthy trading activity
KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed another volatile trading session on Wednesday as the benchmark KSE-100 Index extended its losses, with investor sentiment remaining subdued amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a sharp rise in international crude oil prices.
The benchmark KSE-100 Index settled at 176,042.98 points, declining by 1,580.90 points, or 0.89%, compared with the previous close. During the session, the index traded within a volatile range, touching an intraday high of 176,935.03 points and a low of 175,631.74 points.
Geopolitical risks dampen investor confidence
Market participants adopted a cautious stance as heightened geopolitical risks fueled concerns over rising global energy prices, inflationary pressures, and Pakistan’s external account. Broad-based selling across major sectors outweighed selective buying interest, keeping the benchmark under pressure throughout the day.
Analysts said uncertainty surrounding developments in the Middle East continued to increase risk aversion, with investors trimming exposure to equities amid fears that sustained higher oil prices could adversely affect Pakistan’s macroeconomic outlook.
Blue-chip stocks lead market decline
Among the biggest drags on the benchmark index were heavyweight stocks United Bank Limited (UBL), Lucky Cement (LUCK), Engro Holdings (ENGROH), Hub Power Company (HUBC) and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), which collectively erased approximately 669 points from the KSE-100 Index.
The selling pressure in these index-heavy stocks outweighed gains in selected sectors, resulting in another weak close for the market.
Trading activity remains healthy
Despite the benchmark’s decline, trading activity remained relatively healthy.
Total traded volume stood at 573.1 million shares, while the total traded value reached approximately Rs25.35 billion, reflecting continued investor participation despite the cautious market environment.
Outlook
Market analysts believe the direction of the PSX will remain closely tied to geopolitical developments, movements in international crude oil prices and domestic macroeconomic indicators.
Investors are expected to maintain a selective investment strategy until greater clarity emerges on global geopolitical risks, energy markets and Pakistan’s economic outlook.
