Volkswagen is set to unveil an innovative integration at CES 2024, the world’s premier electronics trade fair taking place from January 9 to 12. The renowned automaker will introduce an enhanced driving experience by incorporating the cutting-edge artificial intelligence-based chatbot, ChatGPT, into its IDA voice assistant.
In a groundbreaking move, Volkswagen will make ChatGPT a standard feature in numerous production vehicles starting from the second quarter of 2024.
This integration, powered by Cerence Chat Pro from technology partner Cerence Inc., sets Volkswagen apart as the first volume manufacturer to offer ChatGPT seamlessly integrated into its vehicles.
This exciting development is part of the latest generation of infotainment in Volkswagen’s prominent models, including ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the all-new Tiguan, the all-new Passat, and the new Golf.
Cerence Chat Pro takes the driving experience to the next level by providing an intelligent and automotive-grade integration of ChatGPT into the IDA voice assistant.
Beyond conventional voice control, this integration enables IDA to manage infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and answer general knowledge queries.
Users will experience enriched conversations, seamless interactions in intuitive language, and receive vehicle-specific information, all hands-free.
Crucially, drivers will not experience any disruption or need to create new accounts or install apps to activate ChatGPT. The voice assistant is easily activated by uttering “Hello IDA” or pressing the steering wheel button.
IDA intelligently prioritizes tasks, ensuring a smooth user experience. If a request stumps the Volkswagen system, it is securely forwarded to AI, and the familiar Volkswagen voice provides the response.
Importantly, ChatGPT does not access any vehicle data, ensuring the highest level of data protection. The questions and answers are instantly deleted, thanks to Cerence Chat Pro’s advanced capabilities.
