Cement despatches decline 16.55% in April 2023

According to recent data released by the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association, cement despatches in April 2023 saw a decline of 16.55% as compared to the same month last fiscal year.

The total cement despatches for April 2023 were 2.951 million tons, down from 3.536 million tons in April 2022.

Domestic cement despatches by the industry during April 2023 were 2.531 million tons, down by 25.13% as compared to 3.380 million tons in April 2022. However, exports despatches increased significantly, showing a growth of 168.61% with volumes increasing from 156,613 tons in April 2022 to 420,677 tons in April 2023.

North-based cement mills saw a decline of 23.54% as they dispatched 2.193 million tons of cement in April 2023, as compared to 2.868 million tons in April 2022. However, South-based mills dispatched 0.758 million tons of cement in April 2023, which is 13.44% more than the 0.669 million tons dispatched in April 2022.

In the domestic market, North-based mills despatched 2.109 million tons of cement in April 2023, down by 24.85% from 2.806 million tons in April 2022. South-based mills despatched 422,071 tons of cement in local markets during April 2023, which is 26.47% less compared to the despatches of 573,975 during April 2022.

Exports from North-based mills increased by 35.93%, with quantities rising from 61,971 tons in April 2022 to 84,238 tons in April 2023. Similarly, South-based mills also saw an increase in exports by 255.49%, reaching 336,439 tons in April 2023 from 94,642 tons in April 2022.

The first ten months of the current fiscal year saw total cement despatches (domestic and exports) at 36.551 million tons, 17.50% lower than the 44.306 million tons despatched during the same period of the last fiscal year. Domestic despatches during this period were 33.095 million tons, a reduction of 16.23% from the 39.506 million tons during the same period last year. Export despatches also saw a decrease of 27.99%, with volumes reducing to 3.456 million tons during the first ten months of the current fiscal year compared to 4.800 million tons in the same period of last fiscal year.

North-based mills despatched 27.157 million tons of cement domestically during the first ten months of the current fiscal year, which is a reduction of 17.06% as compared to the 32.743 million tons of cement despatched during July-April 2022. However, exports from North-based mills increased by 16.35%, reaching 862,675 tons during July-April 2023 as compared to 741,452 tons exported during the same period last year. The total despatches by North-based mills reduced by 16.32% to 28.019 million tons during the first ten months of the current financial year from 33.485 million tons during the same period of the last financial year.

Domestic despatches by South-based mills during July-April 2023 were 5.938 million tons, showing a reduction of 12.19% as compared to the 6.763 million tons of cement despatched during the same period of the last fiscal year.

During the period of July-April 2023, the total amount of cement exported from South-based mills decreased by 36.09%, from 4.058 million tons in the same period last year to 2.593 million tons. Additionally, the total despatches from South-based mills decreased by 21.15%, from 10.821 million tons during the first ten months of the previous financial year to 8.532 million tons during the current financial year. A spokesperson for the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association attributed this decline to the negative impact of the current economic turmoil on cement consumption.
