Nasir Hossain Faces Two-Year Cricket Ban Over iPhone 12 Gift

Nasir Hossain, a renowned Bangladesh cricketer and franchise player, faces a significant setback with a two-year cricket ban, accompanied by a six-month suspension. The sanction results from Hossain’s violation of Article 2.4.3 of the Code, specifically his failure to promptly disclose a gift exceeding US$750—an iPhone 12.

This severe penalty follows Hossain’s admission to three charges of breaching the Emirates Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Code, creating a ripple of concern among cricket enthusiasts.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), in its role as the Designated Anti-Corruption Official under the ECB Code, initiated charges against Hossain in September 2023, encompassing a range of violations.

Charge No. 1 found Hossain guilty of breaching Article 2.4.3, as he failed to promptly reveal the receipt of a gift surpassing US$750 to the Anti-Corruption Official. The contentious gift—an iPhone 12—raises inquiries into the nature of such offerings within the cricketing world.

Charge No. 2 revealed another transgression under Article 2.4.4, where Hossain omitted critical details about an approach or invitation he received. The communication involved the controversial iPhone 12, shedding light on potential avenues for engaging in Corrupt Conduct.

Charge No. 3 accused Hossain of breaching Article 2.4.6, citing his failure to cooperate with the Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation into possible Corrupt Conduct. This included a refusal, without compelling justification, to provide accurate and complete information and/or documentation as requested.

Hossain admitted to the charges, opting for a swifter resolution and sidestepping an Anti-Corruption Tribunal hearing, as mandated by the Code. Nevertheless, the severity of the imposed sanctions raises concerns for both Hossain and the broader cricketing community.

Conditional on meeting outlined criteria for the suspended part of the sanction, Hossain eyes a potential return to international cricket on April 7, 2025. This hiatus, while punitive, prompts contemplation on the underlying issues and challenges cricket faces in upholding its integrity.

The decision underscores the stringent measures in place to combat corruption within cricket, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for players involved in misconduct.
