Customs recovers huge quantity of drugs, smuggled goods

KARACHI: Customs authorities in Karachi conducted two major operations on Friday, resulting in the recovery of a significant quantity of contraband and smuggled goods.

The operations, carried out at Jinnah International Airport and Moachko choke point, underscore the ongoing efforts to curb illegal activities and uphold the integrity of the country’s borders.

Jinnah International Airport Operation: Nigerian National Arrested with Cocaine

At Jinnah International Airport, customs staff intercepted a Nigerian national who arrived from Turkey. Acting on suspicions, the customs officers subjected the passenger to a thorough examination, leading to the discovery of approximately one kilogram of cocaine concealed in the handle of his hand-carry bag.

The estimated value of the seized drugs in the local market is around Rs20 million. The Nigerian national, who initially attempted to pass through the Green Channel, was stopped and redirected for scanning. The scanning machine indicated potential concealment, prompting a physical examination that revealed the hidden contraband in the bag’s handle.

The customs staff promptly detained the accused passenger and confiscated the illicit substances. An FIR (First Information Report) is in the process of being lodged against the individual, reflecting the serious nature of the offense.

Moachko Choke Point Operation: Anti-Smuggling Organization Seizes Smuggled Goods

In a separate operation, the Anti-Smuggling Organization of MCC Preventive intercepted a passenger bus at Moachko choke point based on actionable intelligence. Upon dismantling concealments within the bus, the authorities discovered a variety of smuggled goods.

The seized items include:

1. 80 assorted-sized tires valued at Rs. 528,617,

2. 320 dandas (bundles) of cigarettes worth Rs. 480,000,

3. 3323 meters (565 kg) of assorted cloth with a value of Rs. 408,382, and

4. 470 kg of betel nuts valued at Rs. 130,660.

These operations reflect the Customs authorities’ commitment to combating illegal activities, including drug trafficking and smuggling. The successful interceptions highlight the importance of intelligence-driven actions and the vigilance of customs officers in safeguarding the nation’s borders and preventing the inflow of illicit substances and goods. The authorities continue to work diligently to maintain the security and integrity of the country’s customs checkpoints.
