Gas supply suspension: NKATI appeals PM to save industry

KARACHI: Faisal Moiz Khan, the President of the North Karachi Association of Trade & Industry (NKATI), has issued a fervent appeal to Prime Minister Imran Khan to intervene and rescue Karachi’s industries from the brink of disaster.

The urgent plea comes as a consequence of the suspension of gas supply, which has brought production activities to a standstill, posing a severe threat to the livelihoods of thousands of workers.

Expressing strong discontent, Khan criticized the refusal of the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) to reinstate gas supplies to industries. He highlighted the indispensable role that non-export industries play in manufacturing value-added products for export-oriented sectors, as well as meeting the demands of the local market. Emphasizing their significance, Khan asserted that non-export industries are equally crucial and should not be ignored.

Despite the availability of Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG), gas supplies to Karachi’s industries have been curtailed, which Khan deemed as a blatant injustice. He underscored that the non-export industries are integral to sustaining the overall industrial ecosystem and must not be neglected.

Describing a recent meeting between industrialists and Sui Gas officials, the NKATI President revealed that SSGC officials unequivocally declined to restore industrial gas supplies, shifting the entire responsibility onto the federal government.

In his appeal to Prime Minister Imran Khan, Faisal Moiz Khan urged immediate intervention to salvage Karachi’s industries and prevent irreparable damage. He emphasized the importance of restoring gas supplies to non-export industries, stating that their revival is essential for resuming production activities and safeguarding the employment of numerous workers.

“Karachi’s industries are on the verge of destruction due to the suspension of gas supply. We implore Prime Minister Imran Khan to step in, save our industries, and ensure the continuation of production activities so that the livelihoods of our workers can be preserved,” Khan asserted.

The NKATI President’s appeal is rooted in the belief that the federal government’s intervention is paramount in resolving the ongoing crisis. By restoring gas supplies to industries, Prime Minister Imran Khan can not only prevent a looming catastrophe but also demonstrate the government’s commitment to the well-being of the working class.

As the industrial sector grapples with the repercussions of the gas supply suspension, the urgency of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s intervention is underscored by the potential economic fallout and the threat of widespread unemployment. The ball is now in the government’s court to avert a crisis and ensure the resilience of Karachi’s vital industrial landscape.
