Karachi Chamber Urgently Calls for Relief in Electricity Bills, Seeks Immediate Action by Tomorrow

Karachi, August 28, 2023 – The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has made an urgent appeal for immediate relief in electricity bills for businesses and the general public.

The request comes in response to growing concerns over inflated electricity bills and the resultant frustration among the populace.

KCCI President Mohammed Tariq Yousuf issued a statement on Monday, emphasizing the pressing need for relief. He noted that while the Caretaker Prime Minister had convened an urgent meeting on Sunday and directed relevant authorities to formulate concrete measures within 48 hours to alleviate the burden of inflated electricity bills, the KCCI was facing immense pressure, particularly from its members, including Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and small traders.

Yousuf stated, “We appeal to the Caretaker government to make an immediate decision regarding the urgently required reduction in electricity bills by tomorrow. Both the general public and the business community are highly frustrated, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for us to control the agitation.”

He further added, “The entire business community of Karachi and the rest of Pakistan would greatly appreciate it if the Caretaker Prime Minister announces relief without further delay by tomorrow, allowing people to regain their composure and return to their work.”

In addition to seeking immediate relief, Yousuf requested that the Caretaker Prime Minister and Energy Minister arrange a meeting with the KCCI, even via Zoom, to provide an opportunity for the business community to offer relevant suggestions and to stay informed about the steps being taken by the government to address the situation.
