Pakistan Stocks Gain 141 Points Amid Low Volumes

Karachi, August 15, 2023 – The Pakistan stock market witnessed a positive trend on Tuesday, as stocks gained 141 points, albeit amid lower trading volumes for the day.

The benchmark KSE-100 index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) concluded at 48,565 points, marking an increase from the previous trading session’s closing of 48,424 points on August 11, 2023.

Analysts at Ismail Iqbal Securities observed that the equity market exhibited consolidation throughout the day, driven by a lack of positive triggers to fuel stronger movements. This consolidation, while resulting in modest gains, underscored the subdued market sentiment prevalent during the session.

Trading volumes also experienced a dip, with 252 million shares changing hands on Tuesday compared to the 368 million shares traded in the previous trading session. This reduction in trading activity contributed to the overall muted atmosphere in the market.

However, analysts at Topline Securities offered a different perspective, noting signs of a favorable market environment and increased buying interest in Pakistan’s equities on the day. As a result, the KSE-100 index closed at 48,566 levels, marking a further gain of 141 points (a 0.29% increase).

Key contributing stocks to the positive movement included SYS, FFC, LUCK, PPL, and NESTLE, collectively contributing +189 points. Conversely, OGDC, MCB, and LOTCHEM experienced some profit-taking, leading to a combined loss of 78 points.

Trading activity saw almost 251 million shares exchanged at the bourse, with the total value of traded shares amounting to Rs 9.0 billion. K-Electric Ltd (KEL) emerged as the most traded stock of the day, with approximately 32.2 million shares changing hands.

The day’s trading activity demonstrated the market’s sensitivity to both positive and negative triggers, with specific stocks playing a substantial role in driving the overall index movement.
