Pakistan’s CKD Motor Cars Import Jumps 29% in 9MFY25

Islamabad, April 20, 2025 – Pakistan has witnessed a notable 29% increase in the import of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) motor cars during the first nine months (July–March) of the fiscal year 2024-25, according to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

This surge highlights a renewed momentum in the country’s automobile sector, particularly in the market for locally assembled cars.

The PBS data shows that Pakistan imported CKD motor vehicles worth $680 million during the first nine months of the current fiscal year, a sharp rise from $525.66 million recorded during the same period in FY2023-24. The increase underscores the rising demand for domestically assembled motor cars, with local assembly operations ramping up production to meet growing consumer needs.

Industry experts point to several key factors behind this growth. According to analysts at Topline Securities Limited, the increase in CKD motor car imports is linked to a more stable macroeconomic environment. Factors such as easing inflation, lower interest rates, and improving consumer sentiment have fueled demand. Moreover, the launch of new motor car models and the introduction of advanced variants have further boosted market activity.

Supporting this trend is an 18% rise in the sales of locally assembled cars, as consumers show increasing preference for fresh designs, enhanced features, and better fuel efficiency offered by new models. These improvements are made possible through the import of CKD kits, which are then assembled in local plants.

Meanwhile, the import of Completely Built Unit (CBU) motor cars also saw an uptick, albeit at a slower rate—growing by 7.36% to reach $200.25 million in the July–March period, up from $186.53 million in the same period last year. The slower growth of CBU imports is primarily attributed to high duties and taxes, as well as stringent Customs oversight aimed at curbing unauthorized imports.

With demand for motor cars on the rise and domestic assembly gaining pace, the surge in CKD imports marks a positive trajectory for Pakistan’s automotive industry as it moves towards greater localization and production efficiency.
