Sindh Increases Salary, Minimum Wage and Pension in Budget 2023-24

Karachi, June 10, 2023: The Sindh province has made a momentous announcement today, revealing substantial raises in salary and pension for government employees, as well as an increase in the minimum wages for individuals working in the private sector.

During his address on the floor of the house, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah unveiled several relief measures aimed at improving the financial well-being of the citizens. Among the key highlights is the province’s decision to boost the minimum wage to Rs33,750, and an appeal to stakeholders for their support and cooperation.

The recent salary increase is indeed noteworthy, as it brings a 35 percent raise for employees in Grades 1 to 16. Consequently, their take-home pay will rise from Rs25,000 to Rs35,500.

Presenting the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2023-24 in the Sindh Assembly on Saturday, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated, “We are prioritizing the betterment of our employees by raising their salaries.” The proposed budget includes a 35 percent salary increase for Grade 1-16 employees, and a 30 percent increase for those in Grade 17 and above. Furthermore, a 17.5 percent hike in pension has been suggested.

It is important to note that the Sindh government has taken significant steps to improve the financial conditions of its employees over the past five years, with an impressive 188 percent increase in salaries during this period. Despite initial reluctance from the federal government, last year saw the Sindh government raising the provincial government employees’ salaries from Rs17,500 to Rs25,000.

In a similar vein, the federal government announced an increase in salaries for federal government employees on Friday. The decision was made during a federal cabinet meeting, with an agreement to provide a 30 to 35 percent raise. Consequently, employees in Grades 1-16 will experience a 35 percent increase, while those in Grades 17-22 will receive a 30 percent hike.

These recent developments demonstrate the commitment of both the Sindh and federal governments to prioritize the well-being of their employees. The salary increases are expected to have a positive impact on the living standards of government employees and private sector workers alike, providing them with a much-needed boost in their income.
