Balochistan Braces for Hailstorm on April 17

April 16, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning for a hailstorm in Balochistan on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

In its weather forecast, the PMD predicts dry and partly cloudy weather across most parts of the country, with the likelihood of rain, windstorms, thunderstorms, and hailstorms specifically in Balochistan.

According to the PMD, heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding in local nullahs and streams in several districts of Balochistan, including Gwadar, Kech, Awaran, Kharan, Panjgur, Washuk, Noshki, and Kalat, on April 17. This weather pattern is attributed to a trough of a strong westerly wave expected to enter western parts of the country, with Balochistan likely to be impacted the most.

The forecast for Tuesday, April 16, 2024, indicated dry weather for most parts of Pakistan. However, Southwest Balochistan experienced cloudy weather with chances of rain, wind, and thunderstorms. Over the past 24 hours, cloudy weather prevailed over various regions of the country, accompanied by rain, wind, and thunderstorms in upper Punjab, south and central Balochistan, Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Recorded rainfall measurements in the past 24 hours include significant amounts in different parts of the country. In Punjab, notable figures include 40 mm in Sialkot (City), 16 mm at Sialkot Airport, and 11 mm in Narowal. Similarly, Balochistan witnessed substantial rainfall, with Panjgur recording 24 mm and Kalat 16 mm. In Kashmir, Garhi Dupatta reported 17 mm, while Muzaffarabad recorded 11 mm in the city and 8 mm at the airport. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also experienced rainfall, with Kakul recording 12 mm, Balakot 09 mm, and Cherat 08 mm, among other regions.

The PMD also reported the highest maximum temperatures recorded for the day, with Mithi reaching 41°C and Chhor and Shaheed Benazirabad reaching 39°C.

Given the impending weather conditions, authorities in Balochistan are advised to take precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impact of the hailstorm and associated heavy rainfall. Residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates and adhere to safety guidelines provided by local authorities.

The PMD’s warning underscores the importance of proactive measures in addressing weather-related risks, ensuring the safety and well-being of communities in Balochistan and across Pakistan.
